As early as 1940, graduate chapters of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc had begun to realize the importance of the prestige, good will, and cooperation of women who for various reasons were not members of any Greek-letter organization. Early in 1948, there was such a group organized in Omaha, Nebraska, and they chose the Latin name, Amicae (friends). At the same time, other groups were being organized over the country and it was apparent that Zetas favored the auxiliaries.
The Zeta Amicae of Miami was organized on February 27, 1954 by Beta Tau Zeta Chapter member Soror Ruth N. Polite to bring the Chapter in line with National Headquarters’ policy. Amica Sue Harris served as the first president of Zeta Amicae of Miami. The first secretary was Amica Maybell Braynon.
In 1957, the Zeta Amicae of Miami attended their first Southeastern Regional Conference in Ft. Lauderdale. Delegates at the Southeastern Regional conference were: Amica Annie M. Coleman and Amica Alberta Carey. In 1958, Amica Sue Harris and Maybell Braynon represented Zeta Amicae of Miami at a Regional Meeting in Charleston, South Carolina where the group received first prize for handmade items. In 1960 the Zeta Amica of Miami selected the Junior College as a county project and formed a group to select recipient for the Amicae Scholarship. Today, Zeta Amicae of Miami continues to award scholarships to deserving young ladies. Zeta Amicae of Miami has served as officers on the State and Regional level.
On the National level Zeta of Amicae is as the largest auxiliary chapter in Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and has won more awards for involvement in community services than any other auxiliary. During the National conference (Boule’) they have been recognized for community services and for embracing Finer Womanhood. The Zeta Amicae of Miami has won the State and Regional Queen contest on more than any other auxiliary in the Southeastern Region.
